ProSoft Technology releases the Modbus TCP/IP to IEC 61850 Gateway: A Smart Grid Communication Solution for Substation Automation


ProSoft Technology, is pleased to announce the release of the Modbus TCP/IP to IEC 61850 Gateway. The gateway provides an efficient method for integrating smart grid-compliant IEDs with the Schneider Electric Unity series, including Quantum, Premium and M340 Programmable Automation Controllers, in addition to any other Modbus TCP/IP devices.

The Modbus TCP/IP to IEC 61850 Gateway supports common IEC 61850 applications including substation automation, load shedding, and advanced SCADA data collection. The gateway enables a SCADA control system on a Modbus TCP/IP network to collect, monitor, trend and control granular real-time data from up to 45 IEC 61850 IEDs at the process level (such as relays and switch gears), the bay levels (such as protection equipment), and at the substation automation level (such as PLC/PACs and SCADA control system).
Advanced Integration, Configuration and Diagnostics
The configuration utility provided with the gateway uses IED configuration files (CIDs) to import complex IEC 61850 data structures, then maps IEC 61850 IED tags to Modbus TCP/IP registers. Mapped IED tags structures can be exported directly to Unity Pro for Quantum, Premium and M340 projects. GOOSE, Report Control Blocks, and MMS Read messages provided by IEDs are written to the Modbus TCP/IP server on change of state. The gateway’s time is synchronized by periodic update requests to a Coordinated Universal Time (UTC system).
The gateway tightly integrates with the Unity Pro series, providing automatically generated application-specific Variable and Function Block files. IED drag and drop IEC 61850 Data Attributes allow easy Modbus mapping, and configuration can be stored in an industrial SD card provided with the gateway for disaster recovery.

IEC 61850 is the new international standard for substation automation systems because of its advanced capabilities for monitoring and control of IED devices, and it defines the backbone communication for Smart Grid applications. Smart Grid refers to the network of interconnected devices and technologies that comprise an efficient, modern electricity network. The IEC 61850 standard creates a truly interoperable network of smart devices, providing the availability of an unprecedented amount of data to the utility provider and allowing for better allocation and distribution of energy.

EtherWAN Introduces IEC 61850 Compliant Equipments for Substations

EtherWAN introduces hardened-grade Ethernet Switches, Media Converters and Serial Device Servers that is compliant to IEC 61850/IEEE 1613 standard, which is an Ethernet-based protocol standard that mainly used in power grid and substations for data communications.

While communication is a crucial criterion to utility, power grid and substations, the IEC 61850/IEEE 1613-certified equipments guarantee all the reliability in communication to different terminals such as on measuring, monitoring and control stations. "Our IEC 61850-certified equipments meet all requiring criteria for substation environments. This certification demonstrates the safety and stability of implementation when they choose EtherWAN," Ben Chiang said, Product Manager at EtherWAN.

EtherWAN's EX87000, Managed Hardened 24-port 10/100BASE and 4 Gigabit ports Ethernet Switch, has been certified to IEC 61850/IEEE 1613. New Personality feature
The Automation-class RadioLinx IHN series (industrial 802.11n) now comes with a new Personality feature . This consists of an SD (Secured Digital) memory card and the ability given to the radio to read/write configuration information from/to that card.
Typical benefits include:
·         Manage and distribute multiple configuration profiles(great for OEMs).
·         Easier backup and maintenance of radio configurations.
·         Increased uptime of the network.
·         Damage recovery - load configuration quickly into replacement radio (no computer required).
The radio is able to function normally with or without an SD card inserted.

When a radio is being configured, and the SD card present, the radio writes the new configuration to the card. On boot, a radio accesses the SD card (if present), and writes the settings from this card to its internal flash memory.
This is a standard feature of the RadioLinx IHN series .

The low-power rBOX204 features a wide-temperature operation, a super compact form-factor, a complete expandability, and AXView monitoring software for both indoor and outdoor industrial environments

Axiomtek’s brand new rBOX204 Din-rail fanless embedded system utilizes the low-power AMD LX800 processor and is designed to withstand temperatures ranging from -40°C to +70°C for use in extremely cold or hot environments.

The cost-effective rBOX204 supports four Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) ports, which can power IEEE802.3af compliant powered devices (PD) and transmit data simultaneously, saving wiring costs and suitable for outdoor applications such as IP video surveillance, APs, industrial controls, and intercoms. Plug'n Route

No need for Gateway address in remote devices on the local LAN with Plug'n Route.

Plug'n Route is a new routing feature inside the eWON running firmware 6.2s0 or higher.

It highly simplifies the configuration steps to access Ethernet devices through Talk2M.

When Plug'n Route is activated, then there is no no need anymore to reprogram the Ethernet device to define the eWON LAN as default gateway.
With Plug'n Route, once the VPN tunnel to the eWON through Talk2M established, you can use the local IP address of the Ethernet device to connect to it. As if you where connected locally.
The Plug'n Route feature is activated by default by the Talk2M wizard.

Axiomtek is pleased to introduce cost-effective yet wide-temperature rBOX200 Din-rail fanless embedded system for solutions used in unconstrained thermal environments like power plant automation, facility monitoring systems, manufacturing automation, transportation systems, and more. The cost-effective rBOX200 comes with a low-power AMD LX800 processor with extended temperature range of -40°C to +70°C. Its 8-in/out DIO port provides users with the digital devices connection, and its redundant Ethernet connections provide greater availability and reliability. With its built-in VGA output interface, the rBOX200 is suitable for use with SCADA systems. Besides, multiple built-in serial ports and USB 2.0 ports enable fast data computation and acquisition. To streamline implementation of management applications, Axiomtek has launch 'AXView” monitoring software package for customers to build their own management systems easily and quickly.

Moreover, the rugged device comes equipped with a 12~48 VDC redundant power input via a terminal block. Its super compact size with DIN-rail mounting allows for easy installation into control cabinets. The iCON-47000 8-port 10/100Base-TX unmanaged hardened Ethernet switch provides users with maximum flexibility through easy field installation in power utility substations.


Axiomtek today introduced iCON-47000 8-port 10/100Base-TX unmanaged hardened Ethernet switch, which fully complies with IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 standards for electric utility applications. The iCON-47000 comes with the flexibility of four to eight 10/100Base-TX RJ-45 ports and two 100Base-FX ports. This hardened unmanaged industrial Ethernet switch features an IP30 protected housing with slim form factor (60 x 125 x 145), a wide operating temperature range (-40°C to +75°C), DIN-rail or panel mounting capability, and redundant power inputs to give users greater flexibility for a variety of industrial automation applications.

The iCON-47000 features 10/100Mbps and full/half-duplex auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX operation. With Auto MDI/MDIX function supported, users can easily expand network without using special cabling. Besides, the auto-negotiation capability allows users to connect client or other switches without any configuration. Besides, the iCON-47000 comes with full wire-speed forwarding rate. Moreover, the rugged device comes equipped with a 12~48 VDC redundant power inputs via a terminal block or power jack, and is secured with power polarity reverse and an overload current resettable fuse.

Now available on CompactLogix®: CIPconnect™ allows users to easily configure and diagnose PROFIBUS network from EtherNet/IP

The PROFIBUS DP Master V1 communication module for the CompactLogix platform (MVI69-PDPMV1) is now equipped with CIPconnect™, a feature that enables remote configuration and diagnostics of the MVI69-PDPMV1 module via EtherNet/IP.

CIPconnect technology utilizes the backplane bridging capabilities of the CompactLogix system to enable EtherNet/IP connectivity between a PC and the MVI69-PDPMV1 module via a 1769-L35E or L32E module. CIPconnect also enables Asset Management software that supports FDT/DTM to connect to PROFIBUS DP/PA devices over EtherNet/IP.
